Gameloft's Spider-Man Unlimited is simple and unimaginative in terms of gameplay, but accompanied by such high-quality visuals and engaging unfolding storyline that fans of Spidey will love it anyway.
The aim is simply to get the end of each level without smashing into any enemies or obstacles. Swiping left and right to dodge should feel familiar by now, as should up to jump and down to slide. It's made significantly more interesting by the unfolding storyline, a large portion of which includes voice acting and fully animated scenes. Enough of the aesthetics preserve that comic bookishness that the feel is just right.
It's free, but because it's Gameloft, you know there are a zillion insidious ways to get you to buy into the game with real cash. An energy system slowly creeps up on you as you get more and more immersed in the story, and soon enough you'll either have to wait ages to give levels another go or fork over some dough. There are also a zillion little details also designed to hook you into the game, like multiple characters that you'll need to gain access to certain levels. These tactics are there because they work, and the design complexity must be something that players enjoy some level. Can't say I'm a fan, however - feels like all style aiming to pull money from your pockets accompanied by little gameplay substance.
Still, look, the graphics and the storyline in Spider-Man Unlimited really do merit praise. Give it a go, but I'd advise hanging tight to your wallet.
